Ruth Mettam of KH Hair Castlegate Judges for Wella

Ruth Mettam from Nottingham was asked to judge the Wella Xposure Regional Heat at Walsall College.

Ruth Mettam who works for the KH Castlegate salon in Nottingham is just back from London Fashion Week – working with the Wella styling team.

So how does it feel to be at the centre of Britain’s fashion world, mixing with top designers, catwalk models and seeing at first hand the creation of the latest high street trends?

Ruth said: “London Fashion Weekend is such an amazing and inspirational event. It was an incredible experience to be there working behind the scenes for designer Michael van der Ham.

His Collection was so beautiful. The new products in the Wella SP styling range were great for creating delicate volume for the style we needed to achieve for the show that made the hair soft, silky and shiny, with the delicate body the style needed.”

Michael graduated from the MA fashion course at Central Saint Martins, London. He has worked at Sophia Kokosalaki and Alexander McQueen.

KH Hair – the largest hairdressing group in the east Midlands – has won a national award in recognition of the design and capability of its website, beating off tough competition from over 100 entries.

The group won Most Effective Website in The Sapphires awards, presented by the hairdressing industry’s leading magazine Salon Business. Now in their second year The Sapphires is an industry awards event, created to recognise the exceptional professional skills which create franchise success.

Judges drawn from a range of business backgrounds rated the KH website [khhair.co.uk] highly for its outstanding design, user friendly navigation, great value features for visitors and the innovative way in which the site had been marketed.

KH Hair group board directors Darren Messias and Tim Fee received a trophy from GQ magazine’s Dylan Jones and Salon Business editor Charisse Kenion at an awards ceremony attended by over 400 people, staged at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

Speaking about the award, Darren Messias said: “We were incredibly proud to win this national award against such tough competition.”

The website was designed by [ClientWave] based in Bath, Wiltshire.

KH Hair group, which has 20 salons throughout the east Midlands, are British Hairdressing Business Awards nominees and holders of the Gold Star Salon award presented by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing.

KH Hair Celebrates success

The hotly contested annual awards were announced during the evening with glittering crystal trophies presented in the glizty setting of Nottingham’s most stylish venue, Goosedale Banqueting Centre. The Newark and Ilkeston salons came equal first for the top award of Salon of the Year and the Salon Service Award went to KH in Mansfield.

James Hill, Lichfield salon won the Individual Turnover Contribution Award; Individual Retail Award went to Sean McMenamin Nottingham salon. Individual Clients award was presented to Sophie Barlow, Ilkeston. The Directors award for outstanding achievement was won by Martin Quenault, Ashby salon, Derbyshire. The GHD award was presented to the Lichfield, Staffordshire salon. Winner of the First Year award was Lauren McNab, Loughborough salon, Leicestershire, and the Second Year award went to Emma Davison, Long Eaton salon, Nottinghamshire. The John Flanagan Rising Star award went to Alice Redfern, Sadlergate salon, Derby. The Salon Turnover Award was presented to the Arnold, Nottingham salon and the Salon Retail award, sponsored by Wella Professionals, was won by the Ilkeston salon.

Group creative director, Darren Messias, said: “We are immensely proud of our salon teams and they were all so richly deserving of these awards. They have all turned in an exceptional performance which is no mean feat in these tough trading times.”

KH leads in national campaign

KH Hair commits to ChildLine for second year

KH Hair – the largest salon group in the east Midlands – has committed to another year of fundraising for the NSPCC’s ChildLine service.

Keith Hall Hairdressing’s headquarters and training academy are located Nottingham and there are 20 salons throughout the east Midlands.

Speaking about the decision to support ChildLine for a second year, KH Hairdressing’s creative director, Darren Messias, said: “Fundraising for ChildLine has motivated us all because they do such amazing work, and every penny that we raise goes to resources here in the east Midlands. We managed to donate £12,000 to ChildLine last year, and we’re so proud of each of our salons for making that possible.”

Jenni Cowlishaw, NSPCC’s corporate fundraising manager east Midlands, added:

“It costs £1600 to recruit and train a ChildLine volunteer counsellor to answer calls from children and young people in danger or distress.  By raising £12,000 KH Hairdressing has made it possible for us to cover the cost of recruiting seven more volunteer counsellors at our ChildLine centre in Nottingham.”

KH Hair Celebrates Success.

KH Hair – the largest salon group in the east Midlands – celebrated success at the group’s awards evening and revealed that they had raised over £12,000 for their chosen charity ChildLine.

The hotly contested annual awards were announced during the evening with glittering crystal trophies presented in the glamorous setting of Nottingham’s most stylish venue, Colwick Hall. The top award of Salon of the Year went to the Beeston salon in Nottingham, who also won the GHD retail award.

The Long Service roll call was top of the list and impressive, with everyone mentioned joining the group as young trainees:

Winner of the First Year award was Hayley Chadwick, Ikeston salon, Derbyshire and the Second Year award went to Rebecca Campbell, Mansfield salon, Derbyshire - the salon also scooped the Salon Service trophy.

Rising Star award went to Jo Deane at the Ashby salon, Leicestershire.

The Salon Turnover Award was presented to the Leicester salon and the Salon Retail award, sponsored by Wella Professionals, was won by the Hinckley salon, Leicestershire.

Group creative director, Darren Messias, said: “We are immensely proud of our salon teams and they were all so richly deserving of these awards. Special mention should be given to our fantastic team at Tutbury who have recently launched our 20th salon.”
