Top Tips and Trends for Summer Hair
Top tips and trends for summer hair
Don’t neglect your hair on holiday, say leading experts KH Hair. Group creative director Darren Messias commented: “Everyone is very skin aware in the sun – we’re better informed now and high factor sun cream is the norm – but so many people neglect their hair on holiday with the result that the only option is a drastic cut.
“A good sunhat and seeking the shade between 12 and 2.00pm is the safest option, but there are other measures you can take to help protect hair from the negative effects of sun, sea and chlorine. Here are my top tips:
- Ask the expert. Get your stylist to recommend professional formula products before you go away – we love Wella SP which is formulated for each hair type. The shampoos and conditioners are incredibly nourishing and protecting – perfect for summer hair care and guarding against colour fade.
- Chlorinated or seawater water is a nightmare for hair and scalp – ensure that you rinse hair with fresh water after swimming.
- Hair is at its most fragile when wet so take a wide-tooth comb to detangle – always work gently from root to tip. Just pat hair gently with your towel. If you ruffle it with your towel you’ll rough up the cuticles - tiny outer layers of your hair – leaving it looking dull and tangled.
- Velcro rollers pack into a small space and are superb for a sleek finish or adding bounce. Lightweight straightners are also a big asset.
- Hair that has natural curl or waves can look wonderful on the beach and with very little effort you can make it work for you. Use a leave in conditioner like Sebastian Potion 9 - fantastic for taming rebellious hair. While you’re getting ready to go out in the evening let your hair dry naturally, then use just a slick of wax rubbed lightly between your hands. Using a very gentle scrunching action, work through the hair to create a soft tousled look.
Okay so that’s hair care sorted but what are the key looks and definitive trends? Stand by all you Sarah Jessica Parker fans – it’s official – blondes are massive for summer. Now’s the time to take the plunge says Darren, this season you’ll have plenty of choices in the blonde spectrum, with the range going from pure platinum all the way to delicious strawberry. The only shade to totally avoid is yellow! And in truth blonde is not a colour that suits us all – don’t forget to take into account your skin tone, eye colour and your favourite fashion shades too.
But whatever the trend, true fashionistas are experts at adapting new looks and making them work. So if you don’t want to follow the crowd, then take a few influences from the styles you like the most and get your hairdresser to adapt the look you love to suit you. |

Red Carpet vs Runway - Air Brushed
Air Brushed
Wind-swept hair has hit the heart of every fashionista at gale-force speed. This fresh, natural style is simple to master.
Spritz Wella Professionals High Hair Touch & Feel strong hold texture spray onto hair before blow-drying, giving your locks body, definition and movement.
Blast your hair backwards with your hairdryer and voilà! Julien Macdonald’s runway was more like a wind tunnel at London Fashion Week. Models breezed down the catwalk with turbo tresses that blew the front row away.
Rachel Stevens’ toned-down take on this trend also proved a success on the red carpet. |

Sebastian Professional comes to London Fashion Week
Couture Styling
Our fashion-forward trend scouts were at London Fashion Week to bring you an insight into the Spring/Summer ’10 trends, and were there for the hottest show in town, House of Holland.
The city’s celebrity elite flocked to the front row to get first glimpse of the upcoming looks. The SS10 collection was inspired by 1980’s weddings, and we predict that lace, denim and splashes of neon will be the looks to covet next season.
Meanwhile, Sebastian products will be key in recreating next season’s dishevelled hair, as seen at House of Holland.
The Sebastian Professional styling team worked closely with Henry Holland to create deconstructed updos, to complement the clothing, with Sebastian Microweb Fiber providing the base for the look.
Craft Clay and Matte Putty added definition, while Shaper Fierce and Shaper Zero Gravity hairsprays kept the look in place on the catwalk. |
