Originally born in the United States, Prom celebrations have become increasingly popular in the UK over the past decade. So much so that the event, usually held at the end of a high school year - June /July, is now embraced by more than 85 per cent of schools in Britain.

It's reported that families with a total household income of £50,000 will spend an average of £800 on sending their child to a prom. A ticket can cost up to £300. Then there's the dress or suit, the transport, the make-up, the spray tan (popular with both girls and boys) and, of course, the crowning glory - the hair.

Many parents see the prom is an import from the USA and say American TV programmes such as ‘High School Musical’ have had a big influence on their popularity. However, despite adult reservations, beauty salons receive a total of 208, 344 inquiries surrounding the prom season. But with a whirlwind of glamorous options available, choosing a prom hair style can be a daunting task.

Expert stylists from KH Hair salons across the East Midlands have been compiling their top tips and trends for this season's prom hair and are offering free, no-obligation consultations to those eager to make a memorable entrance as they say goodbye to school life.

KH Hair | Perfect Prom Hair

Darren Messias, Managing Director of KH Hair Group, said: "Ten years ago most British schools didn’t have a prom. They probably had a much-anticipated school disco at the end of term. Now, the kids love them and there certainly is an edge of competiveness amongst fellow school leavers to be the belle or beau of the ball."

Martin Quenault, Salon Director at KH Hair in Ashby de la Zouch has been keeping his eye on the latest prom hair trends. "Scalp braids continue to be very popular." he said. "Loose, almost un-finished styles with half the hair up and half down with knots and twists through the front can look very romantic and feminine. And sweeping fringes are definitely in, with the rest of the hair curled and pinned up. The ghd wand is a fantastic tool for styling long or short hair into beautiful soft waves and accessories such as diamante slides or hair jewellery can really help to ensure individuality."

According to the Salon Director at KH Hair's Nottingham city centre salon, Debbie McMenamin, the key to great prom hair is style and stability, as well as eye-catching shine that will last all night. "We use Wella's Sebastian Drynamic - a dry shampoo with a breakthrough formula designed to instantly refresh hair, add texture and recharge the hair's stylability." she explains. Perfect prom hair is then finished with Sebastian Re-shaper, an anti-humidity hairspray that holds without stiffness and is easily brushed out."

"And, for that long-lasting shine to help you stand out from the crowd on prom night, I'd recommend the new System Professional Luxe Light Oil Spray, which leaves hair nourished and radiant with a non-greasy finish."

KH Hair has 21 salons and a barbers situation across the East Midlands. Free, no-obligation consultations are available now by appointment.
